All You Need to Know about Waterproof Flooring

by BlvdHome

It’s the flooring that’s sweeping the nation! Waterproof flooring, otherwise known as luxury vinyl plank (LVP), is a relatively new product that is perfect for families, pets, or a weekend DIY project. Is it really all it’s cracked up to be? Let’s take a look!

What is LVP?

LVP is composed of a few different layers. The bottom layer is an attached underlayment. Most companies produce an LVP that has a standard rubber sheet attached in order to prevent moisture from coming up through the subfloor. That attached backing will also help keep the floor quiet as you walk across and it provides a nice insulator to keep the floors warmer underfoot. That underlayment is attached to a solid core that is 100% waterproof. Yes, it’s actually waterproof!

There are two types of cores that LVP’s consist of. The first, and perhaps the most popular, is called an SPC core, sometimes referred to as stone-plastic or stone-polymer. This SPC core is free of any foaming agents that would otherwise cause dimpling or swelling. SPC products can also withstand over 3,000 PSI (pounds per square inch), making it one of the toughest floor coverings in the industry.

The second core is referred to as a WPC, which stands for either wood-plastic or waterproof interchangeably. A WPC core is often slightly enhanced with a foaming agent, which makes the flooring a little softer underfoot in addition to being completely waterproof. WPC cores might feel a little more natural but can dimple or impress under heavy furniture such as pianos and pool tables.

On top of the cores is a vinyl picture, either consisting of a wood print or a stone print. Because it’s a printed picture, LVP’s can often display a high variation of colors, something real hardwood cannot do. Most LVP’s have pictures repeated every eight to 12 planks, but some companies produce LVP’s that have 15-plus.

The final layer is perhaps the most important: the wear layer. The wear layer is a laminated bodyguard that keeps the product safe and scratch-resistant. Wear layers are measured in what are called a “mil.” Not to be confused with a millimeter, a mil is about the width of a human hair. The bottom of the barrel products often display a 6mil wear layer, while the best of the best products often display a 20mil. Usually, every product that is at least 12mil is perfect for residential homes.

How Big is an LVP Plank?

Most LVP’s come in a standard 7-inch by 48-inch plank. These planks click-and-lock together, making installation fast and easy. Better yet, LVP’s can be installed free of any adhesives or nails. Some companies produce larger planks, giving them a more natural-looking appearance. It’s not uncommon to see LVP’s as wide as 9-inches or as long as 72-inches.

One of the most frequently asked questions we get at Boulevard Home is, “How thick is LVP?” Well, it depends. Most click-and-lock LVP’s are around five millimeters thick. Some are thicker, perhaps up to eight millimeters or even half of an inch. But don’t be fooled. The overall thickness of the LVP hardly contributes to the overall durability of the product. Half-inch LVP’s will wear just as much as five-millimeter LVP. The key is the wear layer. If durability is the number one concern, spring for a 20mil product and you’ll rest easy. So why are some thicker than others? Thicker LVP’s do offer just a tad more insulation and will be a little quieter underfoot, but oftentimes they are more expensive to purchase because they are more expensive to produce.

What’s the Price?

With all of these advantages, LVP has to be expensive, right? Nope. One of the reasons LVP is so popular is because it is extremely cost-effective. Most LVP sit between $3-$5 per square foot. However, be wary of cheap luxury vinyl, as they could have a smaller wear layer, making it more prone to scratches and wear.

Is LVP Worth It?

LVP is perfect for a young family with little one’s running throughout the house at all times. Products with wear layers above 12mil are perfect for homes with pets and heavy foot traffic. The waterproof aspect of the product will guarantee peace of mind with a price that won’t break the bank. LVP makes for great DIY projects.
