Cooling Mattress 101: Do They Actually Work?

by BlvdHome

Cooling mattresses and cooling mattress pads have taken over the mattress world. If you are looking to buy a cooling mattress, want to know if they work, or just find out what all the hype is about, read on!

What’s All the Hype About?

Have you ever woken up hot and sweaty? While waking up in a sweat puddle is undesirable, it’s more common than you think and easily preventable. It’s scientifically proven that the ideal sleeping temperature is between 60 and 67º F. Many of us sleep much warmer than 67º F., resulting in poor and sweaty sleep. Many factors affect the quality of our sleep such as blue light (light emitted from our phones and the sun), the darkness of the room, the time you go to sleep, and more. But altering the temperature is an easy way to sleep more comfortably. You can turn down the thermostat or buy a cooling mattress!

How Do They Work?

The reason most mattresses are so warm is due to poor breathability/circulation. Most mattresses are very dense and don’t allow the air to circulate, increasing the heat and humidity. Cooling mattresses are made with open-cell foam, which is much more breathable. Also, many cooling mattresses are infused with gel because it has natural cooling properties. Gel is part liquid, so it doesn’t retain heat well. These mattresses stay cool 24/7, so pile on the blankets!

Benefits of Cooling Mattresses

If you are a cuddler, a cooling mattress will be your best friend. With a cool mattress, you can cuddle all night while still staying cool! Since your body is more comfortable when it’s cool, you’ll be able to fall asleep quicker. Not only will you fall asleep faster, but you’ll get more deep sleep. When you wake up feeling tired, it is usually caused by bad sleep, or not enough “deep sleep”. Cooling mattresses can help you fall into deep sleep quicker. Plus, you can kiss waking up sweaty goodbye! Cooling mattresses come in every size.

Cooling Mattress Protectors

Buying a new mattress is a commitment. If you aren’t ready to commit, you can always use a cooling mattress protector! Most manufacturers require the use of a mattress protector if you want to ensure your warranty. So you might as well use a cooling one. Cooling protectors usually stay cool for 15–30 minutes then warm up with your average body temperature. They aren’t as thick and can’t hold as much gel as mattresses, so they absorb heat faster. But, our bodies need to be cool to help us fall asleep. This is why the protectors only stay cool for a few minutes. They will still help you fall asleep faster and more comfortably.
