How to Clean a Smelly Front Load Washer

by Waverly Wilde

Occasionally, front load washers can begin to smell after some time. If this problem arises in your household, know that this usually means your washer isn't defective but requires some attention. One of the major causes of a stinky washer is using too much soap or the wrong kind. Front load washers are more energy and water efficient than top load washers. Because a front load washer uses less water, soap can build up in the drum after the rinse cycle and cause mold or bacteria to collect. Another factor for a smelly washer is that front load washers have a rubber gasket to prevent water from leaking into your house. Dirt and grime collect there and create a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

To clean your washer, utilize these helpful tips:

1. Use one part baking soda and one part water, a half-cup total, in the washer dispenser.
2. Open the washer door, put two cups of white vinegar inside the drum, and run a hot cycle. Doing so will kill residue.
3. Use one part white vinegar and water to wipe out the drum and rubber gasket.

After, your washer will be clean and sanitized. To prevent future stinking, other measures can be taken as well.

Here are some tips to keep your washer from smelling in the future:

1. Use the right detergent- one that has high efficiency- and the correct amount. Otherwise, suds will build up in the drum.
2. Let the drum dry out after each wash cycle by opening the washer door.
3. Wipe down the rubber gasket every few washes to eliminate dirt and grime that can still be stuck.

Using these helpful tips and tricks can help you properly maintain your washer and prevent future issues.
