Types of Sofas and the Benefits of Each

by BlvdHome

What are the differences between a reclining and a power sofa? Can I get this stationary sofa as a sleeper? Questions, questions, questions! We have answers! Today we will cover the pros and cons of stationary, reclining, power, and sleeper sofas.

Stationary Sofa

Stationary sofas are very common. No switches, plugs, or power—just plain and simple. These sofas generally have 2–3 cushions and can comfortably sit up to 4 people. Sectionals also fall into this category.

Pros

These are the most popular and common type of sofa, so they are easily found. You have more options for fabric, styles, and size in this type of sofa than any other. Repairs are easily made. You can generally find replacement parts quite easily.

Cons

As their name suggests, stationary sofas do not lean back or have footrests. Thankfully, you can buy an ottoman for that purpose (plus, some futons have extra storage space!)

Reclining Sofa

Reclining sofas recline back and a footrest pops up. Since there is no power, the recline is manual. There is generally a handle or lever on each side of the sofa.

Pros

These sofas are made to be very comfortable. They have high backs and comfy armrests. They are generally less expensive than power sofas.

Cons

Since there is a lot of movement, breaks are more likely to happen. You can’t put them directly against a wall or else they can’t recline back. You can only recline all the way back and have no control over how far back you’ll recline.

Power Sofa

Power sofas have a cord that plugs into a wall. These sofas will have a switch or button that will recline and lift the footrest.

Pros

These sofas are easy to maneuver. You can sit upright, recline fully, or recline anywhere in between. They are very comfortable! Many of these sofas even have built-in USB ports, which are perfect for charging your phone. These sofas are generally oversized, plush, and have high backs.

Cons

You can’t put them directly against a wall or else they can’t recline back. There is a power cord, so they need to be placed close to a wall. The cord can also pose a tripping hazard if it’s not tucked away. The mechanics can fail and it can be difficult to fix. Styles are more limited than a stationary sofa.

Sleeper Sofa

Sleeper sofas are stationary sofas with either a queen or full bed built-in. They are a great way to save space but also add more sleeping room.

Pros

Sleeper sofas are perfect for families who frequently have guests. It is cheaper to buy a sleeper sofa than it is to buy a stationary sofa and a queen or full mattress. This type of sofa is very common, so you have lots of options when it comes to styles, colors, and fabrics! There are even some stationary sofas that have the option to turn it into a sleeper sofa.

Cons

The mattress has to be able to fold, so the mattress is generally thinner and less comfortable than a regular mattress. Since it’s thinner, it will break down more quickly than a regular mattress.
