The Complete Guide to Bohemian Interior Design

by BlvdHome

Bohemian interior design, often referred to as “boho”, is an unconventional take to design, colors, patterns, and more. Bohemian interior design is full of life, creativity, and spirit. Many people decorate their homes in the Bohemian style to receive artistic inspiration or to relax their minds. Similar to many interior design styles, there are many styles of bohemian: glam boho, southwest boho, etc.

In addition to interior design, Bohemian style also refers to a style of clothing, art, and music. Bohemian and “hippie” styles are comparable in many ways. Eclectic and Southwest Modern interior design are similar to Bohemian.

How to Decorate in the Bohemian Style

Many rules of standard design are thrown out the window when it comes to Boho design. Boho invites mixing patterns, pairing contrasting colors, and oversaturating walls with art. Warm earth tones, especially blue, green, and yellow are frequently used in Boho design, but the acceptable colors don’t stop there. All colors can be used in Boho interior design. The Bohemian style invites the use of organic shapes and influences.

Furniture

Low-lying furniture is always a good place to start when designing your Boho abode. Distressed, used, and antique furniture are frequently used in Boho design. You will see a lot of wicker and rattan furniture in Bohemian homes. Wood dressers, chairs, and tables are commonly left natural and unpainted. Floor cushions and low ottomans are always welcomed in Boho design. A good way to ensure your home is truly Bohemian is by avoiding minimalism; walls should be covered, floors are wrapped in rugs, and any other open space should have a plant friend.

But remember, there are not many rules when it comes to creating a Bohemian space. Whatever furniture or accessory sparks creativity and brings peace to the mind are good objects to bring into your Bohemian sanctuary.

Accessories

Classic Bohemian homes have their walls covered with art, DIY wall hangings, dream catchers, mirrors, and essentially anything you can hang on a wall. Macrame has always been a favorite accessory in the Bohemian style. Macrame is a technique of knotting twine, cord, or rope into shapes, wallhangings, etc. The ever so popular “third-eye” can be found either as a wall hanging or as a figurine in many boho homes. Patterned and/or colorful rugs are a must when it comes to designing a Bohemian space. Plants are a Bohemian room’s best friend. Flowy curtains are often used to add some character to plain windows. Don’t be afraid to add some crystals to a windowsill or a shelf to generate positive energy.
