Are you someone who loves wall art on top of patterned wallpaper or patterned pillows on top of a textured sofa? Do you love a variety of interior styles and cannot decide how to decorate your home? You may want to consider an eclectic styled home. Eclectic interior design is unique because it isn’t defined by many rules or expectations. Eclectic rooms are an unexpected mix of styles, colors, patterns, and so on. Bohemian and maximalism interior design is similar to eclectic in many ways.
How to Decorate in the Eclectic Style
Some key elements of eclectic design are bright colors, textures, materials, incorporating multiple styles, and leaning away from minimalism. If you look at photos of art deco or glamorous homes you can see a commonality between each separate home. When you look at eclectic homes, the only similarity between many homes is the uniqueness they share. So don’t be afraid to try something different or odd when decorating your eclectic home.
Furniture
You will frequently see brightly colored and/or patterned sofas and accent chairs. Furniture like coffee tables nightstands or lamps usually blend into the background, but in eclectic homes, it’s great if they stand out! Have fun when creating a bedroom area. Find a unique headboard and match it with a contrasting styled nightstand. Ottomans are a fun way to add flair to a living room. Mixing and matching chairs at the dining room table is an easy way to show off your creative style (plus you don’t have to settle on only one style of chair, you can get them all!).
Accessories
There are hardly any rules when it comes to eclectic design, but rugs and throw pillows are essentially a must-have. Thankfully, your pillows or rugs don’t have to match in color, size, or texture. A gallery wall with art you enjoy will not only create visual interest, but it’s also a fun way to showcase your creativity. Frame and hang your own art or photographs for a personal touch. Don’t be afraid to have more than one statement piece per room. Try layering 2 or 3 rugs in one room. Another way you can experiment with layering is to use stacked books as a centerpiece on your coffee table. Adding layers to a room using blankets, pillows, books on tables, candles, etc. is a good way to make a room more interesting. Some of our favorite accessories to decorate eclectically are metal figurines, colored statues, tall candles, colorful books, folding screen doors, and of course, throw pillows! A perk of having an eclectic home is not having to stick to one style, which means if you see an accessory you love, you can use it in your home! It doesn’t matter if it’s glamorous, simple, small, or big!
While eclectic rooms are supposed to be full of art, color, and life, it can be easy to let your home become messy. Aim for fullness, but avoid messiness.
